November is National Care at Home Month, a new observance that honors the dedication and hard work of at-home care workers and providers nationwide.

The National Association for Home Care & Hospice and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization merged this year to create the National Alliance for Care at Home (the Alliance). The Alliance’s new website says, “we are stronger together, and so is our community of providers.” This amalgamation aims to better unify its combined membership and strengthen the impact of its representation of at-home care. These organizations have more than 90 years of combined experience in advocating, representing and educating about at-home care.

National Care at Home Month

These two organizations formerly observed National Home Care and Hospice Month and National Hospice and Palliative Care Month. This new observance builds on the history of these previous observances, that began back in 1978 when then-President Jimmy Carter established the observances.

Since the inception of the annual observances, the need for at-home care has grown significantly, which further highlights the importance for appreciation of at-home care professionals, as their work often goes unthanked. The observance of this month and the work from the Alliance has helped pass legislation that advances at-home care access and working conditions.

National Care at Home Month inspires outreach to local media and policymakers to recognize and progress the at-home care industry. “While we are all working toward a common goal of every American having access to high-quality, person-centered healthcare wherever they call home, there are various types of in-home care that National Care at Home Month celebrates,” the Alliance shared on social media.

Each week in November is dedicated to a different type of at-home or palliative care.

  • November 1 – National Family Caregiver’s Day
  • Week of November 4 – Palliative and Advanced Care Week
  • Week of November 11 – Hospice Week
  • Week of November 18 – Home Health Week
  • Week of November 25 – Private Duty Home Care Week
