Understanding spina bifida
Spina bifida is a type of neural tube defect that impacts the spine. It occurs when the neural tube, an early development structure in a fetus, doesn’t form or close completely. This can lead to the backbone forming improperly, often resulting in spinal cord and nerve damage.
There are three main types of spina bifida:
Myelomeningocele: The most severe form, where the spinal cord and nerves develop outside the body.
Meningocele: A less severe form where a sac forms but doesn’t contain the spinal cord.
Spina bifida occulta: The mildest form, often with no visible signs and minor symptoms. It is often not discovered until late childhood or adulthood.
Approximately 1 in every 2,875 babies is born each year with spina bifida. The condition can vary greatly in severity. Some individuals may have little to no lasting effects, while others might face challenges such as partial or full paralysis.
At the heart of understanding spina bifida is recognizing that behind every statistic is a child with unique needs and a story worth telling.
Navigating spina bifida with Maxim: Joe’s story
At Maxim Healthcare Services, we’re deeply committed to enhancing the lives of individuals with various conditions, including spina bifida. Take Joe, for example—a spirited 45-year-old residing in North Carolina. Joe lives with myelomeningocele spina bifida and also navigates the challenges of hydrocephalus, often referred to as ‘water on the brain.’
This condition, prevalent among those with spina bifida, occurs when brain fluid fails to drain properly, resulting in a buildup around the brain. To manage this, Joe has a shunt—a small, yet vital, hollow tube that helps divert the fluid away from his brain. Due to his condition, his medical profile is likened to having a traumatic brain injury.
However, Joe’s zest for life remains intact. He finds joy in attending festivals, embarking on camping adventures, and exploring the creative possibilities of his 3D printer. His dedicated team of nurses and caregivers at Maxim provide tailored, consistent care that empowers him to engage in his favorite activities. Among his caregivers is James, who joins Joe in playing video games, allowing him to interact with others in one of his comfort zones.
Joe’s mother, Denise, fondly recalls his initial apprehension about living independently, away from family. Yet, under the compassionate care of his Maxim team, Joe has not only adapted but truly flourished, finding comfort and happiness in his living situation.
While spina bifida undoubtedly affects Joe’s quality of life and the extent of his activities, Maxim’s care team ensures he is able to pursue endeavors that bring him fulfillment and joy. Through their support, Joe continues to lead a life enriched by hobbies and human connection.
